Growing up here in St. George, I've watched this town change a lot over the years. We used to joke that Friday nights meant either bowling or driving up to Cedar City for something to do. But honestly, things have shifted in the best way possible, and First Fridays at Kayenta is one of those things that makes me proud to still call this place home. If you haven't been out to Kayenta, you're missing something special. It's tucked away near Ivins, surrounded by those red rock formations that never get old no matter how many times you see them. The arts village itself feels like it belongs there, like someone designed the whole thing to blend right into the desert landscape. My wife and I try to make it out every month, and it's become one of those rituals we actually look forward to. The event runs from 4 to 6 in the evening, which is perfect timing because you get that golden hour light hitting the cliffs while you're walking around. March 6th is the next one, and if the weather holds like it usually does this time of year, it should be beautiful. Not too hot yet, maybe a light jacket once the sun starts dipping. What I really appreciate is how they've built this thing into a proper community gathering. It's not just one thing happening. You've got the galleries open, artists working in their studios, and now they've partnered with Southern Utah Market to bring in local vendors. Last time we went, my wife picked up some handmade pottery from a woman who lives just over in Hurricane. There's produce from local farms, homemade soaps, jewelry, all kinds of stuff made by people who actually live here. It feels good to spend money that stays in the community. The DOCUTAH film series is a nice addition too. They screen these "Best of Fest" films from the international festival, and some of them are genuinely excellent. I'll admit I wasn't sure what to expect the first time, but watching a documentary under the stars with the desert around you hits different than sitting in a regular theater. There's something about being outside that makes you pay attention more. For me, events like this represent what St. George is becoming. We're not just a retirement community or a pit stop on the way to Zion anymore. There's real culture growing here, and it's homegrown, not imported from somewhere else. The artists and makers showing their work actually live in this valley. The films celebrate local storytelling. Even the market vendors are our neighbors. If you're looking for something to do that first Friday in March, bring the family or grab some friends and head out to Kayenta. Park early because it does get crowded. Wear comfortable shoes for walking the village. And stick around for a film if you can. It's the kind of evening that reminds you why living in Southern Utah, with all its quirks and rapid growth, still feels like a pretty good deal.
